As I get ready to embark on this year's conference in Italy, I am reminded of the wonderful time I spent in Slovenia. This time last year I was preparing to attend the annual TTG Conference in Italy. At this conference, buyers and sellers of travel set meetings over a span of 3 days to discuss if and how we fit within each other's business model and if we are a good fit to work together. I met with countless hotels, local guides, drivers and tour operators, and regional tour companies for many regions in Italy. My total trip ended being up totaling 23 days abroad, but I am here to tell you about the last leg of my trip to Slovenia. I was invitied by an industry partner who wanted to show me his country and all it has to offer to visitors. If you are like me, I didn't know too much about Slovenia. But now, I am going to share with you why I believe it is the next European hotspot and why you should include it in your next European vacation itinerary!

All ready for my meetings in Venice last year and I can't wait for this year's conference!

#1 The budget minded traveler:
Slovenia is affordable!

Slovenia is often overlooked as a European destination, especially when compared to its more famous neighbors. However, Slovenia is quickly rising in the ranks of European countries with so much to offer travelers while being easy on the pocketbook. You heard me right! Slovenia has every bit as much to offer as other countries, but as it is still a bit under the radar as an “undiscovered” vacation hot spot, you can rest assured that you will get the most bang for your buck when vacationing in Slovenia compared to its neighbors. In fact, Slovenia has been voted the next destination hotspot for 2020! Which brings me to my next point – location!

#2 The multi-country traveler:
Slovenia is easy to get to!

I am not going to lie. I had to pull out a map to figure out where this tiny country even was. I was shocked to learn that it borders some of the most popular European destinations for travelers; Croatia, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. I know right!? So, while you can fly into the capital of Ljubljana, it is also the perfect country to include in your multi country European vacation. It is only a 2 ½ drive (with a private driver) from Venice, 3 hr. 40 min. drive from Vienna, 1 ½ hour dive from Zagreb, Croatia, and 4 ½ hours from Budapest, Hungary. So, you see, there really is no logistical reason to NOT include it in your next trip to Europe.

#3 The food and wine loving traveler:
Slovenia has wonderful food and wine!

Based on the location and neighboring countries surrounding Slovenia, I am sure you can imagine what a wonderful variety of cuisine you will find. I can honestly say that I was very unsure about what local cuisine would even be, but I can honestly say that Slovenian cuisine definitely satisfied this foodie’s palate. As far as wine, the wine region in Slovenia, Goriska Brda, is being referred to as the “little Tuscany.” While visiting the area, we were able to tour and overnight at wineries and meet their winemakers and chefs. The warmth with which we were met at these beautiful vineyards was very reminiscent of its Italian neighbors.

#4 The history buff traveler:
Slovenia is rich in history and architecture!

The area of Slovenia has been settled since Roman times and the rich cultural and historical sites reflect this. It was later controlled by the Austrian Empire and Venetians before coming under the rule of Yugoslavia. There is rich World War One significance as they battled the Russian forces on that front. The WWI museum in the town of Kobarid in the Soca Valley was one of the highlights of my trip. Famous sights such as the Bled Castle and Predjama castle are breathtaking and postcard worthy stops.

#5 The nature lover:
Slovenia is perfect for adventure travel!

If you are an adventurist who loves to be active and out in Nature, Slovenia is the perfect European destination for you. There is hiking, kayaking, rafting, canyoning, skiing, and a whole slew of outdoor adventure sports I've never even dreamed of doing! Look no further for your next adrenaline rush destination.

So, do I have you convinced that Slovenia needs to be on your next vacation itinerary? I sure hope so! It is such a beautiful country with the kindest and warmest people that helped us to feel so welcome. I can truly say that this country is an undiscovered gem, and I hope you will consider it your next destination while it is still flying under the radar.
